HOW TO APPLY COMPRESSES & WET DRESSINGS

or skin problems in localized areas (except hands and feet), this is the proper method to apply compresses or wet dressings:

Use either a folded cotton handkerchief or pieces of bed linen folded eight layers thick. Dip this into a prepared Burow’s solution (see page 000) and gently wring it out so that the cloth is sopping wet. Pat this on the affected area – on and off, on and off – remoistening the cloth when necessary. Do this for 10 or 15 minutes every hour or so until the rash has cooled down, has begun to dry up, or until the crusts have been removed. After compressing, pat the area dry, and then apply the appropriate cream or lotion. (If you plan to use the same cloth for future compresses, make sure to rinse it out in plain water to avoid any chemical build-up.)

For acute, weeping and oozing rashes of the fingers and hands, the best way to soak these areas is as follows:
Purchase two or three pairs of Dermal Gloves (soft, light, white cotton gloves) from your drugstore. With the gloves on, place your hands in the Burow’s solution and remove them every 5 seconds – in and out, in and out. Do this for 10 or 15 minutes and then remove the gloves. Pat dry. (Never let the gloves dry on your hands!)

Repeat this procedure every hour or so until the oozing, weeping, or crusting has begun to dry up. At bedtime, apply the recommended cream or lotion and wear the dry gloves to bed.

For weeping or oozing skin problems of the feet and toewebs, follow these steps:
