Chapter 36

A Planned Separation

FRIDAY, ALL DAY LONG, WAS another day without any news about Mr. Bob. He was beginning to think his plan had failed. After spending the day with the Barkleys, he was not sure he was disappointed. Maybe taking Billy Bob and Butch out of the picture was enough and he seriously mulled over that possibility.

He had completed all of his calls from Billy Bob’s list. It seemed that only one third of those listed cared, cared about anything. This added to his doubts. If they didn’t want to help themselves, how could he make it better for them?

When Peggy arrived Friday night all thoughts of the Fosters were put on the back burner. The time for being shy was gone. They were like newlyweds on their honeymoon. They would only stop lovemaking long enough for them to get something to eat. It seemed the more they made love the more they wanted each other. Time passed quickly for the lovebirds and all too soon it was 6:00 p.m. Sunday night, as he helped put things in her car.

As they walked out with the last load to her car, he approached the subject he had been putting off all weekend.

“I need to tell you something!”

She could tell by his face it was something she did not want to hear.

“Just say it”? she demanded.

“You know my friend, Ron Creel, in Texas?”

“Yeah...”

“He wants me to fly down and help him put sheet-rock in his new house.”

“How long will that take?”

“Six weeks, maybe a little longer, maybe a little less.”

“When are you leaving?”

“Next Saturday morning.”

“Why didn’t you tell me before?”

“I tried. I just couldn’t find the right time. I was wondering if you could pick me up Friday night and take me to the airport.”

“Absolutely, but I can’t get here before 7:00 p.m. this Friday.”

“That’s okay.”

“You can spend the night at my place, Friday, and I will take you to the airport on Saturday morning.”

“Will the neighbors talk? Miss Taylor with a sleepover?”

“I don’t know. I’ll just have to chance it,” then she laughed.

She gave him a big hug and kiss. “I’m glad you didn’t tell me before. It would have spoiled a perfect weekend.”

“It was good, wasn’t it?”

“It was the best! I’ll see you Friday. Oh, by the way. I love you, Shy Guy.”

“I love you too, Miss Peggy.”
