Chapter 34

Following the Plan

WEDNESDAY MORNING JIM STAYED NEAR the front of the post office to pick up any news concerning Mr. Bob and began to get a little concerned when things seemed too quiet. From outward appearances nothing had happened in Blue Ridge, and of course such was not the case. The fire call to the elementary school was not even discussed. No matter how curious he was he could not bring up any of the events. He decided he would go ahead with his plan to call the people listed under Mr. Bob’s name in the notebook. After all, why shouldn’t he?

The first two people he called were a major disappointment. They took the information of Billy Bob spying on them as being expected and remarked they couldn’t have done anything about it anyway. For some reason he decided to make one more call before he gave up. The third person he called seemed a person of importance. It may have been only in his mind ? however, he responded, as Jim would have imagined.

“Would you like Mr. Bob’s unlisted telephone number?”

“I surely do! That old fart is going to pay. No one invades my privacy. I think GBI should know about this.”

“Try Walter Rodgers, he’s GBI and I think he’s already doing an investigation.”

“I don’t know who you are, but I certainly do appreciate the call. Will you give me your name?”

“Just call me Little Bobby’s Conscience.”

He laughed: “Can I quote you?”

“Please do!”

He felt so good about the last call he decided to contact every one on the list before Friday night. All he could do now was wait to see if Mr. Bob felt any pain. Based on Nick’s remark about how Mr. Bob felt about Butch, he thought there would have been at least some outcry. He began to wonder if Mr. Bob could be hurt.
