Chapter 41

Den and Caroline spent most of the second day fitting a security system. Of course it was a very poor quality one that cost very little. But it was more than good enough to keep Jensen well and truly bought on the idea that they were genuinely a security system fitting firm. For the second straight day he never left the house or made or received any phone calls. Gradually he was giving up on the idea of hitting on Caroline, but still managed to make the odd cringe worthy remark and the occasional reaching out to touch her arm when he spoke to her.

Back at the motel the gang had little to do but read, or watch television or have chats. None of them had a desperate rush to get their revenge but the waiting game was becoming to get a little tedious. Ryan worked free lance so he had nothing to get back to. Lee could leave somebody else in charge of his school almost indefinitely and Rachel had quit her latest job altogether knowing that she could find the sort of job she’d be reasonable happy with whenever she got back. Shannon and Lori had only been able to get a week off work so they were the most time bound. But in their current situation time off work wasn’t even close to be pressing on their minds.

At about five o’clock in the afternoon Den and Caroline showed up at the motel having finished for the day and updated the gang on their progress.

“We’ve got virtually nothing left to do”– Den said. “But we’re going back tomorrow, because we are desperate to get a look inside that safe.”

“I can’t believe he hasn’t left the house the whole time we’ve been there”– Caroline said.

“Will you guys be able to break into the safe?” Rachel asked.

“Oh yeah, probably just need a couple of minutes. But we just can’t risk it when he’s anywhere in the house”– Den said.

“Do you think we could get him out of the house somehow?” Ryan asked.

“We were thinking about that”– Caroline said. “But we decided to leave it until tomorrow lunch time. If he hasn’t left the house by then we’ll come up with a idea for getting him out of there.”

“Fair enough”– Ryan replied. “You guys are welcome to stay here with us tonight you know. I’m sure there’s at least one spare room.”

“We’d love to. But we have arranged to go out with this other couple. We’ve cancelled on them a couple of times already. So we really can’t do it again”– Caroline said.

“Oh okay I understand”– Ryan said. “When you’re a couple then your couple friends take priority, I know how it works!”

“I’m sorry we can’t play with you tonight Ryan”– Caroline put on the voice of a young child. “But you’ve still got your other four friends to play with and we’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Go on, get out of here to your boring couples evening whilst us single people can have some fun”– Ryan said.

“Be careful talking about a group of single people having fun Ryan. You’re setting Den’s imagination running wild”– Caroline couldn’t help but giggle as she looked at her husband.

“Well his imagination is right”– Ryan said. “We are having a wild, all night... poker game!”

“Now you are making me jealous!” Den said.

The poker game remained friendly enough, with Lee edging it in the end and nobody losing too much money. It was played in the back of Ryan’s van. Again there were no phone calls made or received by Jensen or any interesting activity on the monitors.
