Chapter 32

“Wow Shannon, that’s awful. I thought I had a bad experience with that guy”– Rachel said and put an arm around Shannon.

“I guess I’ve got a bit more motivation to get revenge. I’m fed up of being scared of him”– Shannon said.

The other four all gave Shannon a hug one at a time.

“And as for you, come here you big hero”– Lori said to Ryan with a big smile and held her arms out for a hug.

“Don’t raise me too high”– Ryan said as he hugged Lori. “They are the only two incidents in my life where I’ve intervened in that sort of way. Actually I know what I am saying. You’re right. I am a hero. Remember I said I was a big fan of Batman, well I’m a lot like him I walk the streets at night and protect the innocent.”

“The first bit was fractionally more believable”– Lori laughed.

“So am I the only one of us who hasn’t actually met or seen this guy?” Lee wondered.

“Yeah I suppose you are”– Shannon said.

“Well I’m not sure if the guy who chased me is actually him. He could be some other member of the gang for all I know”– Lori said.

“From your description of the guy who chased you, I’d say it was him”– Rachel said.

Ryan’s own van became very useful as the stakeout vehicle. The next day he drove the others round to the prison where Bret’s brother was serving time. Stocked up on drinks and plenty of ready to eat food supplies before they set off, prepared for a lot of waiting. It was not a lot else to do but sit and wait, the five of them got to know each other better. Ryan agreed to giving three lots of golf lessons, only Rachel didn’t want any. Lee and Lori found out they grew up within half a mile of each other. Shannon and Ryan realized the other was just as big a film fan as them. Lori and Rachel shared very much the same taste in music. And generally throughout the day there were very few prolonged quiet moments. They kept watch on the prison throughout the whole visiting hours’ time. And there was no sign of Bret.

“So now what do we do?” Rachel asked.

“We should come back tomorrow, and the next day and so on”– Lee said.

“I know that. I mean what do we do tonight?”

“How about we all go bowling?” Ryan suggested enthusiastically.

“Oh that’s a heck of a good call”– Lee filled with enthusiasm.

Bowling sounded like a good way to get rid of the stress for the three ladies as well. So it did become a full group outing.

All five of them thoroughly enjoyed their evening out. Scores really didn’t matter. Even though there were some very competitive people within the group. Each of them was so happy to spend some time doing something normal. For a couple of hours or so whilst not quite being able to fully forget the situation they were in, they were at least able to put to the back of their mind the recent trauma they had been through. The poor pins had a lot of frustration taken out on them. And Ryan felt as if he came close to fulfilling his only ten pin bowling ambition. So one day he could break a pin. They were using just one lane of a busy bowling alley. No one who was looking at the five of them that night would have thought it was anything other than a group of friends having an evening out. They laughed at each other’s expense, giving each other high fives at any strike or difficult spare. Whether it was the extreme circumstances in which they had all met or not it was hard to tell.

The five of them were all getting along very well.
