Chapter 29

Lori woke up just before her nine o’clock alarm went off. She got ready quite quickly and went off to see her Mother in her nursing home. It had been the first weekend since she’s been in there that Lori had not visited. The fact that her Mother almost certainly wouldn’t have been coherent enough to notice that Lori hadn’t turned up, didn’t make Lori feel any better about missing out on her weekly visit. She knew that there was a great chance her mother wouldn’t recognize her. But Lori still wanted to see her and desperately wanted to talk to her. In the circumstances her mother was the perfect person to talk to – likely the only person Lori could talk to.

When she got to the nursing home the staff on reception checked with Lori that she was all right herself, expressing their surprise that she had missed a weekend. She told them that she was caught covering for somebody at work. Her mother was in her room sitting in a big, old chair at the window, and staring at the garden area.

“Hey Momma”– Lori said quietly as she put a hand on her mother’s shoulder.

“Hello angel”– mother put a hand on top of Lori’s but never stopped glaring out of the window.

Lori pulled up a smaller chair next to her Mother’s and sat down in it.

“Sorry I didn’t come this weekend.”

“You did come this weekend dear, you sat there with me all Sunday.”

Lori looked sadly on at her mother and a tear came out of the corner of Lori’s eye. “Oh that’s right I forgot. What did we talk about?”

“You were telling me all about how exciting it is at college and all about that wonderful boyfriend of yours. Then I told you all about my days on Broadway.”

“Oh of course, how could I forget? There’s something else I need to talk to you about today Mom.”

“Anything dear, you know me I can talk about anything and listen for hours.”

“Well the thing is I’ve got caught up in something terrible and I’m in so much trouble.”

“Your girlfriends have been playing pranks again?”

“No Mom, a lot more serious than that. I promise I haven’t done anything wrong. But now people are getting killed and it’s because of something I’ve done. I did the right thing Mom. I know that I did. But I just wish it had never happened. And I just don’t know what to do now. Now I have to make a big decision. I can either become a killer myself in a way, or I can stop a group of people getting the revenge they want and deserve, or I can just wait around wondering like I have been for the last four years. Oh God how did life get so complicated? If I’d done nothing in the first place none of this would have happened. But I just don’t think doing nothing for ever is the right thing to do. Somebody wants me and four other people dead. He’s already killed three people and tried to kill the rest of us. He’s obviously pure evil. What should I do Momma?”

Her mother’s gaze never moved from the window the whole time.

“You’re a good girl Lori, be true to yourself no matter what situation you’re in and things will always work out for the best.”

“What did you call me?”

“Lori, your name, girl. I should know I gave it to you.”

“Oh Mom, I love you”– Lori looked upon her mother with still a hint of tears but now also a smile. She hugged her without getting her out of her chair. “Got to go now Mom. I got things to do. Look after yourself and I’ll be back real soon.”

“Bye, say hello to that boyfriend of yours. You must bring him here with you one day. I don’t think the nurses believe me when I tell them my daughter is dating the college Quarterback.”

“They’re just jealous Mom.”

“That’s what I tell them.”

Lori got a taxi away from the nursing home. She told the driver to drop her off a mile or so from home. She felt like walking as she thought. Lots of thinking to do, she just kept walking round and round. Losing track of how far she’d walked, how long she’d been out there and where she’d been. After an hour or so of going around in circles literally, deep in thought, Lori sat down on a bench. Opposite the bench was a building that Lori stared at. That building was a Police Station.
