Chapter 22

Rachel finished explaining what had gone on in that room to the other four who all hung on her every word.

“Wow!” Ryan said.

“Some loose end he turned out to be”– Lee said.

“Yeah, he’s been waiting four years to get his extremely misguided revenge”– Rachel added. “Do any of you guys know why you’re here now?”

“I’m still completely in the dark”– Shannon replied.

“Me too”– Ryan admitted.

“I’ve no idea why any bank robber would want revenge on me, unless”– Lee sounded completely mystified at first then suddenly something dawned on him. “Of course, yeah it was about four years ago as well I think.”

“What was?” Rachel asked impatiently.

“I was at a bank one day, paying a cheque in or whatever, when there was a robbery. Police obviously knew about it because they were there just a few seconds after the crooks. Anyway when the police got inside one of the robbers tried to make a run for it, unfortunately for him he ran in my direction. Kick to the head sent him flying backwards and a couple of cops were all over him in an instant. Oh wait a minute, oh wow. I’ve been thinking that Mick looked familiar. He was the cop in charge that day, remember it so well now.”

“Well guess that’s Lee’s reason for being here all cleared up”– Ryan stated the obvious. “What about you Lori, any ideas?”

“No, I’ve never had anything to do with any bank robbery”– Lori replied defensively and seemed to make an effort to make sure she didn’t make any eye contact with any of the others.

“Probably isn’t anything to do with the robbery, remember I’m not”– Rachel said.

“Maybe he wanted to throw in a few other people to make sure the connection wasn’t made to him until he wanted it to be”– Ryan guessed.

“Oh my God”– Rachel said as she looked at Ryan.

“I know I played a part in saving your life, but really you can just call me Ryan.”

“I remember you now”– Rach said, still a little overcome by the sudden realization.

“You do?”

“Yeah it was only a couple of months or so ago, we were in a bar in the city at night. I was getting hassled by some sleazy older guy, he wouldn’t leave me alone, you came over and got rid of him for me.”

“I recall doing something along those lines about that time”– Ryan was still having trouble recalling Rachel.

“Come on you must remember me, I was a little drunk, dancing away with a couple of other girls, I was wearing something slutty”– Rachel looked down at the dress Bret had picked out for her to wear. “Well something sluttier, big high heels and oh my hair was pink!”

“Pink hair girl, yeah I remember that now!” Ryan enjoyed the moment of clarity. “I remember thinking just how far out of that guy’s league you were. He was so sleazy, old, wouldn’t take no for an answer, had his hands all over you and, and I’m guessing his brother is doing time for bank robbery.”

“That would be him”– Rachel said. “Well I guess that explains your reason for being here. Where did you go that night? I never did thank you properly, if at all for that matter. Can’t believe it’s you.”

“Well I made sure he got out of the place then”– Ryan glanced around at Shannon for a brief moment. “Well then I just decided to head home. I’m not really one for nights out and wasn’t particularly enjoying that one”– Ryan’s turn to sound a little defensive.

“So it really looks like none of us deserve to be here”– Shannon said as she stared straight ahead out of the front window of the van.

“Only in his mind”– Rachel said.

“Why did you take that guys phone?” Ryan asked Rachel.

“Oh my God, I can’t believe I nearly forgot about that”– Rachel shook her head at her own dreamy behavior. “Guys I’ve got a way for us to maybe get a little of the upper hand against this guy.”

“Tell us everything”– Shannon replied quickly.

“Well I over heard this Jensen guy talking to the mercenaries, he told them to call him on a number when we were all dead, simply telling him ‘game over’. I’m thinking it would be a good idea for us to make that call, pretending to be the mercenaries.”

“Would be good to have somebody who wants us dead to think we are already dead”– Lee acknowledged.

“I’m guessing by the fact that you are telling us this that you remember the number”– Ryan said to Rachel.

“Of course!” She replied with a smile, now feeling a bond with Ryan now that she’d remembered their brief shared past.

“Well it’s got to be Lee who makes the call, needs to be a male voice and he might just pick up on my accent”– Ryan said.

Rachel gave Lee the phone and the number. Indeed Bret Jensen did answer. And Lee said the words: “Game over.”

Bret Jensen was in the back of a car when he received the call. As soon as he heard Lee’s voice he hung up.

“Damn it, they’re still alive!”
