Chapter 20

“Come on, boss! If the bomb was going to go off it would have gone off by now. Lets get in there and kill these people”– one of the five mercenaries said.

“All right, if you guys are so desperate for action you go in now. But I’m going to wait for a while longer.”

The other four didn’t need a second invitation. They marched straight for that green door. They entered the room and could see no sign of their targets. Two more steps and two of them fell through the hole. Their screams and shouts were the signal for Ryan and Lee to jump out from under the table. Two mercenaries that we left up there were so startled by what had happened to their colleagues that they didn’t have nearly enough time to turn, point and fire their guns at the advancing Lee and Ryan. Lee executed a classic karate kick to the head of the nearest mercenary, whilst Ryan threw himself at the one slightly further away and swung an arm into the mercenaries chin. Aesthetically Lee’s action was far more impressive but they both had the same effect of knocking the man flying backwards and to the ground. Having thrown himself off his feet, Ryan was quickly up and on top of the mercenary and reigning down punch after punch on the nose. Meanwhile Lee delivered one expert blow to his man’s windpipe, crushing it and killing him instantly.

“Kill this one now”– Ryan said to Lee as he got up off his man, who now had a very blood splattered face. Another expert punch from Lee and this man was also dead.

Meanwhile the other two had landed by the feet of the three ladies. Lori threw the acid at them as soon as they hit the floor. Their screams of pain were momentarily halted by being dazed because Rachel swung the wrought iron frying pan into each of their heads. Before either of their heads could clear sufficiently for them to have a clue what was going on, let alone what to do about it, Shannon plunged the long knife into each of their hearts.

“How are you doing ladies?” Ryan looked down the hole and asked. All he could see was the motionless and blood stained mercenaries.

“Got them both!” Rachel joyously exclaimed as she ran into the main room, closely followed by Lori and Shannon.

“You guys are still alive as well!” Lori added.

“Took them out clean!” Lee joined in with the triumphant mood and went to high five all of the ladies.

“Wait a minute”– Ryan dampened the enthusiasm with his tone. “Did you say you killed both of them? As in two.”

“Yeah only two fell down”– Shannon replied.

“You said there was five Rach”– Ryan said as he dropped down on his haunches despondently.

“Yes she did!” The fifth mercenary joyously announced as he entered the room holding his machine gun. “It looks like the incompetence of the others means it’s my lucky day, I get to kill all five of you.”

Ryan still down on his haunches was right next to the glass snake tank. Instinctively he picked it up and hurled it very quickly at the mercenary. Reacting to Ryan’s movement the mercenary went to point his gun at Ryan but before he could fire the tank smashed into his gun almost knocking it out of his hand and smashing the tank into several pieces. Stood on the opposite side of the mercenary to Ryan, Lee very quickly kicked the gun out of his hand and before the mercenary could react at all. Ryan had swung the glass that had contained the blood into his face, cutting him and knocking him to the floor. Shannon didn’t hesitate for a second once the mercenary hit the floor she plunged the knife into his heart.

“Wow”– Lee said. The quickness of Shannon’s actions took him and the rest of the group a little by surprise.

“Extreme situations. Normally I’m like a fluffy little bunny rabbit”– Shannon responded with a deadpan tone and facial expression.

It was at this point that they all realized that the snakes were slithering around the room completely free.

“Trust me, it would be a good idea to get out of here”– Lori said.

All five of them ran out and into the van, Rachel stopped to search the last of the mercenaries to die and pull out a phone.

“I’ll explain later”– Rachel told Ryan who watched her.

“Just drive us somewhere fast, anywhere but here”– Shannon said to Ryan, who did drive fast for about five miles before finding a rest top for travelers to get out and stretch their legs whilst enjoying the views of the natural surroundings. Ryan slid back the parting between the front and the back so now he and Shannon in the front could talk to and see the three in the back.

“Anybody even close to getting their head around what is happening to us?” Lee asked. “I’m still trying to think about who could be doing this too all of us. I mean none of us know each other. Yet it appears we have something in common.”

“I know who it is. I’ve seen him”– Rachel said quietly as she sat back into the corner of the van.

“Oh of course, you saw him shoot Mick. So you know who he is and why we’re all here”– Lori said.

“Well I don’t know everything. But I do know a lot more than I did the last time I saw you guys.”

“I bet you do”– Lee said.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Rachel asked Lee, sounding offended by his tone.

“Come on, he just happens to kill Mick, but leaves you alive. Are you sure you didn’t kill Mick? Are you sure you’re not in on the whole thing? Us four seem to be having to do a lot more than you, so far.”

“I’ve seen somebody shot dead in front of me. I’d say that was going through a lot.”

“We’re caught in a trap”– Ryan said musically.

“I can’t go away,

Because I love you too much baby...

Why can’t you see?

What you’re doing to me,

When you don’t believe a word I say.

Ryan once again burst into song to diffuse a tense situation: We can’t go on together, with suspicious minds...”

Shannon joined in almost straight away and Lori and Rachel joined in with the chorus and a few other lines. Whilst Lee just shook his head and eventually allowed himself a smile.

“Are all British people as crazy as you?” Lee asked.

“Let’s not make it a race issue. Just accept me as a unique, slightly mad person who likes a sing-song to lighten the mood.”

“Very big resounding, anyway. Rach, you were about to tell us what you know”– Shannon returned to the matter at hand.
