Chapter 16

Ryan continued with the driving duties and following the directions they ended up at what looked like an old, unused farm building.

“This must be it”– Shannon said.

“Now what?” Ryan asked just as he switched the engine off.

“It says to enter the building through the large green door”– Shannon said.

“It looks like we’re going through the green door then folks”– Ryan said.

“This has got trap written all over it”– Lee warned.

“I know, but this guy can kill us any time he wants to. I say we just carry on playing his game and hope he makes a mistake”– Ryan replied.

“Maybe one of us should stay in the van?” Lori suggested.

“Or maybe two?” Shannon added.

“Look ladies, trust me. I’m all for protecting the ladies in the old fashioned and polite way. But seriously I think there’s at least as much chance of you getting hurt if you stay here as if you go in there”– Ryan said.

“Did you just replace the word killed, with the phrase ‘get hurt’?” Lori asked with a smile.

“You noticed that did you?” Ryan laughed back. “Look I don’t want to make anybody do anything they don’t want to do. But this guy has been very specific about playing to the rules so far. And as much as I hate being a puppet in some sick guys theatre, I really do think that it’s the best course of action for us to take.”

“Yeah I think you’re right”– Shannon conceded.

“Me too”– Lori agreed.

“Lets get through that green door then”– Lee added.

A few seconds after the four of them entered the farm house through the green door, the door swung forcibly shut. In the middle of the room was a table with a piece of paper on it. Lee read from the paper to the others.

“Congratulations on completing my treasure hunt. You have indeed found your treasure of Detective Mick and the lovely Rachel. Mick is dead as it happens. But he’s still up there with Rachel. And I promise you she is not dead. The thing is, you are entering the building has set off a countdown on a bomb detonation. Sorry if that’s getting a little old. But I did so much enjoy you guys, scrambling around that big house stopping bombs going off. Anyway this time there’s no riddle, just some other types of challenges. The bomb is placed under this table. And to diffuse it you need to key in the four digit code. The good news is that the code is in this room. The bad news is they are hidden away in some nasty place. Look to the table on the right. Pull away the cover. And you’ll find four separate containers that each have one of the numbers in. Get the number from each box. And enter the numbers in the order of the boxes. Simple really, oh and by the way you have to get one number each. If you don’t get all the numbers then you and Rachel will be blown sky high”– Lee read whilst shaking his head. The absurdity of the situation was going way beyond belief.

Ryan looked down under the table. “Five minutes until the bomb goes off.”

Shannon and Lori pulled the cover off the table, revealing three boxes and one glass.

“Oh this is crazy, no way is this happening. Let’s just get the hell out of here. That’s one way of avoiding getting blown up”– Lee said after he saw what was on the table.

“And leave Rachel to die?” Lori asked him.

“For all we know she’s not even up there”– Lee replied.

Shannon ran out of the main room to the base of the stairs and shouted up them: “Rachel are you up there?”

“Yes! Oh thank God somebody is here. He’s got me locked in a room. He shot Mick right in front of me. Please, get me out of here. Make sure you do whatever he says to do. Though, knowing him he’ll have some way of knowing what you’re doing.”

“We will do it, honey. We’ve just got to diffuse another bomb and we’ll be right with you”– Shannon shouted back up. “There’s a sentence I never thought I’d say”– she said as she entered the main room again.

“Lee, if we run he’s just going to track us down anyway”– Ryan said.

“Okay, I’m on board”– Lee replied. “Lets just get this over with.”

“This is like room 101. All right ladies! Now I will be all old fashioned and say ladies first. You two pick which number you want to get. Then Lee and I’ll will pick from the other two.”

“Thanks Ryan”– Lori replied.
