Chapter 13

Lee

Lee Morris was proud about the way his life was turning out. Partly because he was not proud about how his life had been. As a kid he was very hard to discipline. Teachers and parents all struggled to control the non conforming youth. He spent a lot of time on the streets with so called friends, who were really just fellow rebels who thought they knew better than all the people who were trying to help them. Lee wasn’t proud of all the misdemeanors of his life as a youngster, especially those that were at the expense of others. To start with it was minor crimes, like writing graffiti on walls, which lead to other forms of vandalism, then the occasional arson, it was when Lee got caught up in muggings that his life changed. The first few that he was involved with went by without any extra incidents. The people handed over their wallets and Lee and his two accomplices got away without any repercussions. One night though, the three of them really picked on the wrong target. Unknown to them, the person they attempted to mug was a karate expert, in his early forties and no great size at all but he still sent Lee’s two so called friends flying with two expert blows. Lee stood looking eye to eye with the would-be-mugger. Instinctively Lee swung the piece of metal piping he had in his hand at the man’s head. The attack was dismissed nonchalantly with a forearm block, sent the metal flying out of Lee’s hands. Lee was hurled against the wall and then the karate expert held his own foot up to Lee’s throat and pressed hard enough for breathing to be very difficult but not impossible for Lee.

“Now son you have some choices to make”– the Karate man spoke with a wise air about him, whilst still holding his foot to Lee’s throat. “You can either continue with your pathetic and wholly unimpressive life, completely void of self fulfillment or you can choose to make some changes in your life and see if you can actually amount to something. Being the generous soul that I am, I will give you a way of changing. Come to my Karate school and learn how to control yourself and your life. Bring your friends with you. If you do look this particular gift horse in the mouth then do be warned that I walk these streets a lot at night. And if you don’t come to my schools and I see you around here again I will beat you to within an inch of your life then call the police and tell them you were trying to mug me.” He removed the foot from the throat and dropped a business card before walking away.

Lee’s two accomplices have never taken up the offer. And Lee never saw them again. The Karate instructor have completely changed Lee’s life, who himself is now an expert and earns a living teaching Karate, particularly enjoying any time he can teach a wild youth the control and discipline needed.
