CHAPTER 8
Langley, Virginia

Friday morning

Special agent Frank Prescott was on his computer doing some research in his office in Langley, Virginia. He pulled up all the information he could find on old Soviet nuclear materials. It looked like it was going to be the end of another relatively uneventful week until Jack Hoskins called requesting his assistance on a trip to the Georgia republic. Frank usually got depressed this time of year, so a road trip was probably just what he needed. His wife’s birthday was coming up and his daughter’s followed three weeks later. They’ve been gone for over two years now, and Frank still missed them dearly, and dreaded the lonely weekends without them. He sold their house as quickly as he could and moved into a small apartment to escape the memories. He’s seen and felt a lot of physical pain during his fifteen years with the agency, but heartbreak was something that ran far deeper. He tried to move on with his personal life, but he was never one to hit the singles bars or dating services and the like. Frank was handsome and confident enough to find a new partner, but he thought that the guilt of starting a new family would be too much to bear. After all, he was still close to his in-laws who had lost their only daughter and granddaughter, and the idea of his starting a new relationship brought on a lot of guilt. The tall, athletic looking, thirty-seven year old Prescott even felt guilty sometimes about not feeling guilty. He looked across his desk at Peggy and Meredith’s picture and smiled. He silently told them that he would be on a mission this weekend and may not be thinking about them for a while. He thought for a second about putting their picture in his briefcase, but then thought that he might damage it. He loved the picture of his two girls, little Meredith with her favorite light blue coat and teddy bear when she got back from her first day at preschool, and Peggy had her arm around her, proud that she was in school and glad to have her back home. That’s the way he liked to think about them, Peggy taking good care of Meredith, until he is able to be with both of them again.

Frank walked to the door with a bounce in his step. He welcomed any mission where he might be able to hamper the ability of a terrorist, he felt like he was avenging the loss of his family. Hopefully Hoskins’ Anti-terrorism group was on to something good.

He grabbed his gear to leave the office and turned to look at the picture one last time.

“I’ll see you two later.”
