CHAPTER 2
Langley, Virginia

Thursday evening

In a small nightclub in downtown Langley, Virginia, the air was thick with smoke and the smell of beer and liquor. David Gorridge and his musical group were on stage playing a blues song much to the delight of two of his friends from work that were in the sparse crowd watching him. After the song was finished the guitarist walked over to his friends’ table.

“David, that was absolutely incredible,” Brad Spencer said, “I really thought you were exaggerating, but now I’m a believer, you’re a really good guitar player.”

“What do you think, Cathy? I know you’re not crazy about this kind of music.” David asked.

Cathy Walters who works in the CIA’s legal department said, “That was a really great song. It was probably the best version of ‘Georgia On My Mind’ that I have ever heard. Where did you learn to play like that?”

“When I went to the State University back in Tbilisi, Georgia, I majored in engineering, but I also studied classical music as a hobby for many years. As I got older, I switched over to blues and rock and roll.”

“Did you learn that Ray Charles song when you were in the Georgia Republic or did you learn it here in the States?” Cathy asked.

“Believe it or not, the song’s been very popular in the Georgia Republic for years, I even saw Ray Charles when he visited Georgia, the people love him over there.”

“David has an anniversary coming up next month,” Brad said.

“Yeah, I’ve been an American citizen for five whole years.”

“That’s great,” Cathy said, “Do you still miss your old country?”

“Yeah, I mostly miss my sister, she raised me after my parents died, and when things get really hectic around here, I miss the laid back quietness of Tbilisi.”

“How did you and Brad meet?” Cathy asked.

“When I came to America seven years ago, I got a job as an electrical engineer at Neutron Electronics, that’s when I first met Brad.”

“Then I left to go to work at you know where,” Brad said.

“It wasn’t long after that when the technical market started crashing, and Brad helped get me in too. I started out as a language specialist and waited for a technical opening in the Electronic Surveillance Department with Brad.”

“That’s great,” Cathy said.

One of David’s band-mates tapped him on the shoulder as he walked by.

“Sorry guys, we have one more set to do,” David said.

Brad looked at his watch and said, “It’s getting late, we’ve got to run too, we’ll see you at work in the morning.”

“Goodnight guys, thanks for coming to see me play.”
