The First Interviewees



Angus: Experienced fisherman from west coast of Scotland. Single aged 40. Offering his services complete with fishing boat.

Belinda: Musician aged 25. Single. Inclined to be nervous— initially, friendly with Philip, then Robert.

Bill & Helen: Bill, carpenter, 33. Partner: Helen 27. Two children: Richard 5 and Zoe 1. Bill spent one year in Australia where he met Helen. Helen was a shop assistant.

Bob & Susan: Bob, builder 40. Married to Susan, 40, artistically creative with furnishings etc. Three children: Jane 17, Sarah 15, and Paul 12. Jane eventually gained a place at Sheffield University to study medicine.

Brenda: Aged 18 wished to spend her “Gap” year on the island before going to university but was not invited to join the group.

Dafydd & Gwyneth. Dafydd: butcher aged 35 Married to Gwyneth, aged 32. Two children: Alison 8 and Mark 4.

Charles: Vet 55. Divorced. Subsequently left the island after acrimonious dispute with the farmers.

Denise: Personal assistant 28. Single with a university education and has great organisational abilities — Manager for Education Food and Welfare etc. on the island.

Edith: Homemaker, 60. Single, enterprising woman of dedication; Kitchen/canteen worker with Madge and Rene; Writing her autobiography.

Gerry & Doris: Gerry, farmer, 45. Married to Doris 43. Two children Patrick 22 and Theresa 19. Gerry Manager for Agriculture Fisheries and Food. Doris helper on the farm. Patrick, responsible for the fish farm. Theresa formerly worked in local tourist office, now responsible for all of the islands tourism.

Giles: Company director, 46. Divorced. Offered £1 million with strings, then later as donation. Elected treasurer in second year. Built large house built for himself.

Graham: Irish poet and author, 30 Nervous. Somewhat of a recluse and lived apart from everyone else on island for a while. Befriended by Nick.

Ian & Madge: Ian, self-employed farmer 42. Robust, very fit and used to outdoor life. Ian inherited family farm in Scotland. Responsible for the arable farming and sheep. Married to Madge aged 39, kitchen/canteen with Edith and Rene.

James: Single, 21 was unemployed. Kind hearted and practical helper on the island. Has child by Colleen.

Jock & Morag: Originally residents on island both 55. Jock became store man. Morag died having spent less than a year on the island.

John & Alice: John, engineer 34. Manager of Engineering Services. Married to Alice 32, former secretary; Ken’s helper with filming on the island. Two children Jonathon 12 and Trevor 10.

Kate: Secretary aged 24. Single. Farm accountant and secretary on council Friendly with Angus.

Ken: BBC TV producer, 41. Responsible for filming the island’s day-to-day affairs for TV series. Married to Jenny 36. Riding school co-manager with Lynda. Two children Michael 13, and Kirsty 11.

Lynda: Model, 21. Single. Reliable. Assistant teacher in infants’ school, organiser for all sport and evening classes, and the riding school with Jenny

Matthew & Ruth: Matthew, Doctor, 36. Married to Ruth 30, trained nurse, Matthew’s secretary and pharmacist. Two children: Andrew 6 and Nicola 4.

Miranda: Teacher, 32. Single. The islands first school teacher of 5-16 year olds. Council member.

Nick: Unemployed, aged 22. Tearaway. Helpful in many areas and is island’s bus driver

Nigel: City trader, 27. Single. Arrogant. No contact with him after interview - would not have asked him to the island.

Paddy & Rene: Old friends of Jim. Paddy, contractor, 42. Married to Rene, 38. kitchen/canteen worker. Two children Colleen 17 and Shaun. 14. Colleen came with her illegitimate baby Jim and now has another boy by James, named Jason.

Philip: Solicitor, 44. Single. Musical. The islands first treasurer and friendly with Belinda. Departed after first year but continued to assist from London.

Robert: Worked in information technology, 25. Single. Responsible for all computer associated matters on the island. Friendly with Belinda, Colleen and others.

Terry & Kathy: Terry, 35, electrician, assistant to John. Married to Kathy, 32, hairdresser. Three children Allan 9, Sally 7, and Miranda 5.
