Preface

With the advent of the Internet, vast repertoire of information is available at the click of the mouse. Information dissemination, e-business, interactive and collaborative computing, access to mind-boggling quantum of reference material, etc are possible thanks to the Internet.

No doubt, the Internet has opened the doors for a treasure trove of information.

Simply, the way we do business has undergone a drastic change.

In more than one way the Internet has revolutionized the marketplace. Today, electronic commerce is a reality and online trading is thriving with more and more people choosing the Internet as a medium for purchasing products and services.

While the Internet has opened up a world of opportunities in e-commerce and information sharing, on the flip side the Internet has its own threats and abuses which are perpetrated by a new breed of criminals known as cyber criminals.

Human ingenuity is so resourceful with every technological revolution that the local crook & the conman just went global and digital…graduated to a different plane with the advent of the Internet. Criminals just shifted to the cyberspace conning people by committing cyber crimes.

Just as you would know that our world is unsafe and criminals lurk in dark alleys, in the cyber space too criminals lurk and the danger is all the more high with new and novel methods employed by cyber criminals.

With the Internet being touted as no one being incharge and one can do whatever one wants, cyber criminals started having a field day with a range of crimes like cyber terrorism, cyber stalking, cyber warfare, website defacement, attacks on web servers, stealing critical information, exposing and stealing confidential data, hacking, invading your privacy, software piracy & copyright issues, etc

A cyber crime involves your:

They are the much-prized targets and as such they are under constant threat.

The second part of this book gives a brief overview of the various cyber laws that are in place in the United States of America.

The high rate of incidence & frequency with which the cyber crimes occur have made law makers all over the world to sit up and take notice. Cyber-savvy nations concerned about their netizens’ online safety have come with a slew of legislations to bring the perpetrators to book. However, this is only a beginning since the cyber laws in most countries are in a nascent stage and are still in the process of evolution. This means that it would take a while before they are made fool proof and adequate in containing cyber criminals.

Always use common sense - it is the best rule of thumb to avoid becoming a victim of a cyber crime. In cyber crimes that involve swindling of money, the offers are too good to be true. Yet in unfailing regularity, even rational people fall for it and get conned out of their money, information and privacy.

Towards the end of the book you’ll find samples of various scam messages just to give you an idea of how they look like. This would help you be on your guard when you actually receive them and act wisely.

Someone stealing your information or password is different from you yourself aiding the cyber criminal to con you! It is as if you are handing over the keys of your house to burgle it. Here is where common sense plays a crucial role in seeing through the game of the cyber criminal. In this book, you will learn the tricks used by cyber conmen to deceive you to part with information you have unwittingly and willingly.

Prevention is better than cure goes the saying. It perfectly applies to your online activities as well. Reading Cyber Crimes will help you to acquaint with the various Internet threats and email abuses and you will learn how to use your knowledge to thwart cyber crimes directed against you. For forewarned is forewarned indeed!

Written with the layman in mind, Cyber Crimes aims at acquainting individuals about the various cyber crimes prevalent in the Internet and email and provides tips for ensuring your online security.

This book is written with the individual Internet surfer & email user in perspective and not for organizations.

Please note that this book is by no means a complete information treasure trove on cyber crimes; at best, this is just primer on the various internet threats and email abuses prevalent today.

So, watch out and stay safe stay safe out there in the Internet. Have fun and do safe computing!
