INTRODUCTION

Many people know Africa as a poor continent, a continent with lots of problems. It consists of many of the poorest countries in the world known as third world countries.

But why is it so? Why are most of the countries in Africa poor, seeing that Africa has most of the world’s natural resources? In fact, the poorest countries in Africa are the ones that have most of these resources: gold, diamonds, oil etc. In normal circumstances these countries should be rich. So, why aren’t these countries rich? Is it because of poor leadership? Many people will think so, but I don’t. Do you really think that the liberators of Africa fought so hard for Africa’s independence so that their countries could be poor? Do you think that Kenneth Kaunda, Robert Mugabe, Nelson Mandela etc. are so mean that they don’t care about their people, who they fought for? Do you think that they are happy to see their people poor? Even South Africa with all its gold and diamonds, all its industries and strong economy, is not comparable to any of the Western European Countries.

With the exception of Nelson Mandela, and a few others, if African leaders are so bad and it has led to the ruin of their countries, why is it then that the United States of America, still the richest and most powerful country on Earth when it has George Bush for President? He is hated by most people, mocked and considered dull by others. Then definitely poor leadership is out. Is it because some African presidents stay in power too long? Well if that’s the case then Australia should be poor because John Howard has been in power for more than ten years and Australia is still a rich country and enjoying economical growth. So definitely long years in leadership is out. Is it because that Africans are lazy? No. In fact Africans are one of the most hardworking people in the world. They don’t complain, they don’t bludge at work, they always turn up for work and work the full hours and willing to work for more hours even without overtime payments.

Is it because Africa is too far away from the rest of the continents? No. In fact it is very close to Europe. Is it because it has a small population? No. Africa has a very large population. Is it a small continent? No. Africa is a very big continent.

So, why is it then that Africa has many of the poorest countries in the world?

A continent that is rich in natural resources, has ample labor force, has a seacoast and very hardworking people. The reason lies all the way to the United States of America’s foreign policy. Most countries in Africa are non-aligned. Meaning that they do not have strong military alliances with America, Britain, Russia, China, France or any of the other rich countries or those considered a threat to the USA

So, since America wants to control the whole world, a poor Africa is much easier to control than a rich Africa. And since none of the African countries have military alliances with Russia or China (the USA’s major worry), there is no need for the USA to panic by also making military alliances with the neutral ones. If Africa is neutral, then it’s not a worry to the USA The USA does not have to waste lots of money spying on African countries and sending in USA warships close to the African coast and having troops in some African countries. All this costs lots of money. The USA military budget is already stretched and it doesn’t want to waste anymore money checking on rich African counties’ military build up. So if the African Countries are poor, then they don’t have any money for military expansion. And they won’t be a threat to the USA's military and economical supremacy.

This whole world has been built on wars. The boundaries and divisions that we have are based on countries conquering other countries or taking over from the indigenous people.

Powerful countries just like big commercial businesses will always be watchful of a merging competitor and will do anything to be the sole power. Countries in Africa with a lot of natural resources can easily become very powerful when large investments are poured in. So it’s the USA’s job through the C.I.A to make sure that these large investments are not pouring in. Africa is made to survive on rations. On little money borrowed from the International monetary fund or world bank, which are both controlled by or influenced by the USA And the USA makes sure that African countries are only given enough to survive and not to grow.

Money is also lent to non-profit making ventures of African countries, like education and health. If the I.M.F gives African countries money to buy books for schools, how does it expect the country to pay the loan back? School books don’t make money, they will educate people but people will have no jobs thus it’s hard to pay back the loan. And the countries will be suffering because the government will be forced to stop other projects so that it can pay back the loan. The I.M.F and World bank, do this on purpose. They make sure the lend money to Africa for projects that don’t have a payment plan system, non-money making projects. And in doing so, the countries will always suffer and find difficulties in paying back the loan. As the saying goes: don’t give a beggar fish, give him a fishing rod. The I.M.F and World bank together with the other Western lending facilities, which are all controlled or influenced by the USA do the opposite on purpose. They give poor African countries ‘fish’ instead of ‘fishing rod’. And when the ‘fish’ is finished, the poor African countries ask for more ‘fish’ and then more fish again. And this has been going on for years and years.

Eventually African countries complain. They find it very difficult to pay back the loans, which are just accumulating. Pressure is put on the African governments to provide services but the government has no money. All the money is going back to paying the loan. African leaders then start crying for loan cancellation. The USA doesn’t like the idea. Since the USA does nothing about it, no other country does anything about it, for fear of angering the USA

Then people like Sir Bob Geldof, hear Africa’s pleas and decide to help, putting pressure on the West. With media coverage and too much pressure from local people, America and its allies decide to run off Africa’s debt. But wait, this isn’t the end of it.

While Africa has been crying for debt cancellation, the USA has been developing a new system to counter that. That system is called Vulture Funds. And with the help of its satellite system and influence, the USA is able to hear about any debt cancellation by another country. And before the deal is signed, it offers to buy the debt through its companies on a cheaper price and takeover all debt services. So the country that was just about to have its debt cancelled now has a new creditor. And instead of just asking for the money owned, the new creditor also asks for interest.

Example is when Romania was about to cancel Zambia’s 1979 debt of tractor purchases. Donegal international based in the Virgin Islands and partly owned by USA — based Debt Advisory International bought Zambia’s $4 million debt for $3.2 million in 1999. And charged the Zambian government interest. Now ironically after Zambia was recently promised debt cancellation together with a few other African countries, it has recently been ordered by a London High Court ruling to pay Donegal International 42 million dollars. If a country couldn’t pay 4 million dollars, how do you expect it to pay 42 million dollars? All this talk about Africa’s debt cancellation was just bullshit because the USA wants a poor Africa, so that it isn’t a threat or challenge to USA’s military supremacy.

One might ask, what about China. It’s growing powerful. Why isn’t the USA doing something there? First and foremost, China is not a direct threat to the USA It doesn’t even have an air craft carrier ship. Its army is not yet as advanced and it has good relations with the USA at the moment.

But however, the USA is strongly watching China’s growth. It’s finding alternative markets to produce its goods. Its becoming more and more expensive for Western countries to produce their goods in China, so alternative Asian countries are being considered. The USA does not consider Asia a big threat since it has powerful allies like South Korea and Japan. Further more, the USA is strongly watching China’s Military budget and weapon advancement. But most of all, China has military alliances with other nations. And this is why a lot of countries in Africa are poor. They don’t have military alliances with other big powers. So unless, a big power knows that Africa will fight with it during war, it’s not going to commit its resources.

Big countries help those small or other big countries that they know the can rely on in great need especially war.
